Obi-Wan Kenobi - Boots

Find good resources for Obi-Wan boots is quite difficult. Often times, his feet are either darkened or cut off. These boots are reportedly Australian tank boots. Since the likelyhood of finding these boots is pretty slim, here's a way you can make your own.

The boots have a spat (similar to Darth Vader) that covers the front and sides. There are also three straps that run across the tops and one that runs around the ankle. These straps run all the way around the boot, as seen below. These horizontal straps are held in place on the sides by vertical straps that run up the entire length of the boot (See the Episode I Visual Dictionary for a better picture.).

Begin by acquiring knee-high, medium brown boots.

The dimensions for the spat will change, depending on how big your legs are. The spat should start on the arch of the foot (the flap) and run all the way to the top of the boot.

The flap should be glued (with Leather Weld) to the inside of the shin guard.

The image below shows the side view of the straps. The horizontal straps get glued underneath the vertical one. In order to conceal where the horizontal straps begin and end, place the ends underneath the vertical straps. Use 1" strips of leather for these straps (Tandy Leather #448900).

If you already know how to work with leather, you're in great shape! If not, see the Boba Fett Leather Belt section. Instructions are given on cutting, preparing and dyeing the leather.

Obi-Wan Kenobi - Boots - Alternate Version

Begin by buying a pair of Cadett style boots from Grand Prix Equestrian. You'll also need: one can of dark brown NuLife Leather/Vinyl Spray Coating, made for shoes and boots (this can be found at shoe repair shops), several strips of 1" leather from Tandy Leather (#448900), eight 1" leather "belt keepers " (#471001) from Tandy and strong glue (I used Elmer's StixAll).

First, the boots are sprayed with the spray coating and left to dry for a few hours. Be sure all dirt and grease are removed from the boots before spraying or the spray won't stick, causing peeling and cracking. Then spray all of the leather strapping to match.

Now glue the keepers in place on the boot (3 at the top, one at the ankle), and measure and cut the straps to fit at each location. Let the glue dry a few hours. Once the glue is dry, thread the strap through the keepers and close them at the ends. I ended up drilling small holes in each end of the strap and using small wire ties to close them. For best results, hide the ties under the keepers. We don't recommend using glue here because it was not going to hold them for long, especially under walking conditions.

You can buy a pair of Obi-Wan boots at the West Coast Leather Factory.
