Episode I Obi-Wan Kenobi Costume Banner

Obi-Wan Kenobi - Undershirt & Shirt

There are 3 parts to the shirt: the undershirt, regular shirt and the tabbard. For the undershirt, pick up a pattern for a Japanese kimono from your local fabric store. Be sure to use a soft material, like raw silk, for this shirt since it is right up against your skin. I would recommend omitting the sleeves here to help keep yourself cool.

For the regular shirt, copy the pattern for the undershirt. The only modifications necessary here are to make the V neck close a little lower and to flare the sleeve openings a little.

If you look at the Jedi necklines, they are sort of wrinked/bunched up where the edge meets the rest of the shirt. You can get this effect by bunching the fabric slightly when sewing the edge.

One thing to remember is to make sure the material you use for the shirt and tabbard are the same color. The undershirt is generally a little lighter.

The Tabbard

The tabbrards used in Episode I were simply two pieces of fabric that were draped over the shoulders and held in place with the sash and leather belt. The front flaps should extend about 7" below the belt.

The Tabbard - Alternate version

The tabbard pattern itself was modified from a Simplicity pattern for a group of biblical outfits (#8275). The pattern has a long and a short tabbard to choose from, so use whichever you like. The only real modification to the pattern is the V-neck on the front (The original pattern has a circular neck with a small vertical slit cut in it) and the addition of the flaps in the front. The front flaps should extend about 7" below the belt.

Another great pattern to use is McCall's #2433. This is a generic "Space Family" pattern but it includes instructions for all the fabric pieces, except for the tabbard.
