Darth Maul Make Up Tips

Unless you can accurately smooth out the line of a bald head cap, you're going to need to shave your head for Maul. Actor Ray Park is shown to the right in the Barber's chair, getting ready for his part.

Paul Engelen, a TPM make up artist, used standard clown make up for the skin. For the makeup and powder, try Ben-Nye or Mehron (which is what the Ringling Bros.clowns use). The Original Darth Maul used Reel Creations tattoo black and the red was actually a water-base Aquacolor that would fade, but it was quite easy to reapply by sponging on.

If you decide to use a bald head cap, use hair gel to flatten down your hair.  If your hair is really long, fold it up over the top of the head. Use an eyebrow pencil to draw a line around the natural hairline of the person.  Test fit the bald cap and trim it as close to the eyebrow line as possible, but still leaving enough of a lip to be glued down.

Wash your face well, then use an astringent all over.  Make sure your face is clean shaven.  Apply these materials in an area that is cool so you won't perspire.

Next, fit the bald cap from the back and pull it forward.  Apply a small line of spirit gum at the center of the forehead.  Then attach the bald cap and allow the spirit gum to dry.  Work from the center out to each side, applying gum and then press the edge of the bald cap into it.  Keep it tight.  Work it behind the ears and all the way around to the back.  Fasten the cap down and trim any extra off the back. Use stipple latex on a makeup sponge and dab it around the seam to conceal it.

Now apply the red grease makeup to the face and head except where there are major areas of black (eyes and lower jaw).  Get a new sock and fill it with baby powder.  Lightly tap your face with the powder sock.  This sets the makeup and will eliminate the shine.  Gently feel around your face until there is no stickiness or wetness.  Brush off excess powder with a powder brush.

Next is the black. Apply it where there is black.  Repeat steps for the red, and your done.

For reference, grab any book or magazine with good head shots of Maul. The Hasbro 12" Darth Maul doll is a great reference, too.

When you're ready to take the makeup off, don't try soap and water. It will not work.  You will just wind up scrubbing off your skin. Professional clowns use baby oil, so that's what you should use, too..  Baby shampoo works well, too.  Use care around your eyes.
