Having a large variety of tools isn't a necessity but it does make prop and costume building much easier. All of these tools can be found at your local hardware store, or at harborfreight.com. Aside from your standard hammer, screwdrivers, etc., we recommend the following tools: |
| Belt Sander - A belt sander is basically a motor that turns sandpaper. They are great for quickly smoothing rough edges and altering the shape of your project. |
| Vise - A vise is sometimes like a second set of hands. They will hold your work while your hands are free to actually perform the work. |
|
Hobby Knife - Also known as an Exacto knife but the term "Exacto" is actually a brand. These razor sharp knives are indispensable. |
|
Rotary Tool - These tools normally come with several attachments including: sanding wheels, cutting disks, polish wheels, etc.. These tools are invaluable during the prop and costume making process. Be sure to get one that is NOT cordless. The batteries don't hold a very large charge, so you'll probably end up with the tool dying when you need it the most. If you do get one that is cordless, try the Black & Decker Versa-Pak series. The charger holds two batteries, so one can be charging while the other is in use.
